Artist Statement

My narrative approach explores how photography can blossom into a space of gathering within the broader Vietnamese community. As newer generations of Vietnamese consciously engage with stories inherited from the past, my ongoing exploration examines different historical and cultural ruptures in personal and collective memory to further question how we might overcome, together, these invisible gaps in our multiple and fragmented identities.
Through a diasporic-queer lens, my photography untangles linear narratives of the past to challenge the boundaries of one’s cultural identity. By documenting personal, mundane and often invisible moments in the daily lives of the Vietnamese community, my interest in photography retraces and calls into consciousness all knowledge that is lost, devalued and forgotten within dominant and official narratives. Amid this lifelong journey of uncertainty for racialized youth, I see a new wave gifted with the innate ability to reimagine a home wherever they go. Through commemorative gestures of remembrance, this gathering collectively evokes a multitude of experiences that are both intimate and shared by those who have been displaced and are empowered through collaborative and transformative encounters.

Mon approche narrative explore comment la photographie peut devenir un point de rassemblement au sein de la communauté vietnamienne. Alors que les nouvelles générations de Vietnamiens(nes) s'intéressent consciemment aux récits hérités du passé, mon exploration visuelle examine différentes ruptures historiques et culturelles dans la mémoire personnelle et collective, afin de s'interroger la manière dont nous pourrions traverser ensemble ces fossés invisibles dans nos identités multiples et fragmentées.
À travers un perspective diasporique-queer, ma photographie démêle les récits linéaires du passé pour remettre en question les frontières de l'identité culturelle. En documentant les expériences personnelles, banales et invisibles de la communauté vietnamienne, la notion de chez-soi se transforme en un lieu physique et un espace imaginaire où les souvenirs se transmettent de génération en génération. Au cœur de ce parcours incertain pour les jeunes racisés(es), je perçois une nouvelle vague dotée de la capacité innée de réimaginer son foyer peu importe où ils/elles se situent. À travers des gestes commémoratifs, ce rassemblement évoque collectivement une expérience à la fois intime et partagée par ceux et celles qui ont été déracinés(es), et se nourrit de rencontres collaboratives et transformatrices.
